The
20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is one of the main themes of
the 2009 summer edition of Welcome to Germany. There are a total of four articles
on this subject, with information on original sites and museums you can visit
and on the many events being staged to mark this historic turning-point in German
history 20 years ago. Berlin is naturally the main focus, but there is also
information on Potsdam near Berlin, on Leipzig where the famous Monday
demonstrations started the peaceful revolution, and also on the old German-German
border, which is now a fascinating strip of green, unspoilt scenery running
through the entire length of the country, with many hiking and cycle trails,
monuments and museums along the way where you can experience the heritage of
former West and East Germany.
This issue also covers the 2,000th anniversary of the historic Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, which halted the Roman expansion into what is now Germany, and which is being commemorated with three major exhibitions and a number of other attractive events for tourists.
Other historical subjects
in this issue include the Schiller Year 2009, marking the 250th birthday of
the great poet and writer; the numerous events being staged to commemorate the
250th anniversary of the death of the composer Georg Friedrich Händel;
the 200th anniversary of the birth of composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy,
who is closely associated with the city of Leipzig; the Martin Luther Reformation
Jubilee Decade 2008-2017, which is being celebrated under the motto Luther 2017
500 Years of Reformation; the Year of Emperor Otto IV in
Braunschweig; and the famous Landshut Wedding historical pageant.
Visitors who enjoy city tours will find some interesting articles on the European Capital of Culture Ruhr 2010 and on the 300-year success story of Meissen Porcelain®. This issues Germanys Fascinating Towns section presents short portraits of another 25 interesting towns throughout the country.
